Why Scopes Lose Zero: A Diagnostic Checklist

Almost every \u201cmy scope lost zero\u201d story ends with a loose screw, a different lot of ammo, or an inconsistent cheek weld. Work these in order — cheapest and likeliest first.

Start here: is it actually the scope?

Scopes fail far less often than the things attached to them. Before assuming the optic is broken, work down this list in order. Each step is cheaper and more likely than the one after it, and most shooters find their answer in the first three.

1. Check every screw with a torque driver

Base screws to the receiver, ring caps around the tube, and — on rifles that have them — action screws in the stock. Use the manufacturer's inch-pound specs and an actual torque driver, not feel: over-torqued rings crush a tube and distort the erector, under-torqued rings let the scope creep under recoil. Add witness marks — a paint-pen line across each screw head — so next time a loosening screw announces itself before your group does.

2. Change one variable: the ammo

Different loads, different bullet weights, and even different lots of the same load print to different points of impact. A "lost zero" that appeared when you opened a new box of ammo is not a lost zero — it's a different load. Re-verify with the exact ammunition you zeroed with before troubleshooting anything mechanical.

3. Audit your position and cheek weld

Inconsistent head position produces parallax-driven shifts that look exactly like a wandering zero. Two checks: first, set your parallax adjustment (side focus or AO) properly for the distance — with the target sharp, moving your head slightly should not move the reticle relative to the target. Second, confirm your cheek weld is repeatable; a scope mounted too high for your stock forces a floating head position, and the impacts wander with it. Shooting off a bipod one day and a bag the next also shifts point of impact on many rifles.

4. Check the barrel and its surroundings

A fouled bore, a barrel that isn't free-floated but is now contacting the stock (common as humidity changes wood, or when a bipod loads the forend), or a loose barrel nut will all move impacts. Slide a dollar bill along the forend to check float. Also let the barrel cool: a string of shots from a hot thin barrel walks, and that's physics, not the optic.

5. Only now, test the scope itself

Run a box test: shoot a group, dial a known amount up, shoot, dial right the same amount, shoot, then down and left back to start. The shots should trace a box and the last group should land on the first. If it doesn't return to zero, or the movements don't match the dialed amounts (see MOA vs MRAD for the math), you may genuinely have a tracking failure. Also check the reticle isn't visibly canted, and that the erector isn't at the end of its adjustment range — a scope maxed out at the edge of its travel behaves badly, which is what shimmed or MOA-canted mounts exist to fix.

6. Then use the warranty

If steps one through five come back clean and the box test fails, you have a real defect — and this is where warranty policy earns its keep. Document your box test results before contacting them; it speeds everything.

The preventable version

Torque to spec, witness-mark the screws, keep one zeroing load, and re-verify zero after any transport, drop, or optic removal. Four habits that eliminate most of this list before it starts.
