MOA vs. MRAD: Scope Turrets for Normal People

The internet has argued about this for twenty years. The practical answer takes two minutes, and the part that actually matters isn't which one you pick.

The short answer

MOA and MRAD are both angular units for measuring adjustment and holdover. Neither is more accurate. Pick the one your shooting partners and your reticle use, then learn it properly. The real mistake isn't choosing "wrong" — it's mixing a reticle in one unit with turrets in the other, or never learning either well enough to use under pressure.

The two numbers worth memorizing

1 MOA ≈ 1 inch at 100 yards (1.047 inches, but nobody in the field cares). Most MOA scopes adjust in ¼-MOA clicks, so four clicks moves your impact about an inch at 100 yards, two inches at 200, and so on.

1 MRAD (milliradian) = 3.6 inches at 100 yards, or more elegantly, 10 centimeters at 100 meters. Most MRAD scopes adjust in 0.1-MRAD clicks, so one click moves impact about 0.36 inches at 100 yards. MRAD is the metric-friendly system: because a milliradian is one unit of height per thousand units of distance, the math stays clean at any distance in any unit as long as you're consistent.

That's genuinely the whole technical difference. MOA offers finer clicks (¼ MOA ≈ 0.26 in vs 0.1 MRAD ≈ 0.36 in at 100 yards) — a distinction that matters far less than it sounds, since group size and wind read dwarf it.

The mistake that actually costs you

Mismatched reticle and turrets. An MRAD reticle with MOA turrets means every correction requires converting units under time pressure, in wind, with a heartbeat — and it's exactly where people fumble. If your reticle measures in mils, your turrets should adjust in mils. If your reticle is MOA-based, get MOA turrets. Any modern scope worth buying offers matched pairs; check the spec line explicitly, because manufacturers do still sell mismatched combinations.

How to choose in practice

Choose MRAD if you shoot with a partner or club that uses mils, if you compete in precision disciplines (where mils dominate), if you think in metric, or if you want the simplest mental math for ranging and corrections. Choose MOA if you're a hunter who thinks in inches and yards, if your existing dope and rifles are MOA, or if you simply find "inches at 100" more intuitive. The right answer is usually whichever your community speaks, because spotting for each other requires a shared language — a spotter calling "come up point three" is useless to someone with MOA turrets.

Turret features that matter more than units

A zero stop (you can dial up and return positively to zero without counting revolutions) is worth more than the MOA/MRAD choice. So are positive, audible clicks you can feel through gloves and a clear revolution indicator so you know whether you're one turn up. Capped turrets suit hunters who zero once and hold over; exposed tactical turrets suit anyone dialing for distance regularly. Verify your scope actually tracks

Whatever unit you choose, confirm the scope moves the amount it claims: shoot a box test or tall target test — dial a known amount, verify the impact shifted that amount, dial back, confirm return to zero. A scope that doesn't track truthfully makes the unit debate irrelevant, and it's the single best twenty minutes you can spend on a new optic.
