Red Dot Footprints Explained: Why Your Mount Doesn't Fit
You bought the dot. You bought the mount. They don't bolt together. The word nobody explained to you is \u201cfootprint\u201d — and it's the single most common red-dot buying mistake.
The short answer
A footprint is the bolt pattern and recoil-lug geometry on the bottom of a red dot sight. Optics with different footprints will not mount to the same plate or slide cut, even when the sights look nearly identical from the outside. Footprint compatibility — not brand, not price — determines whether a dot fits your pistol slide, mount, or adapter plate.
The families you'll actually encounter
Trijicon RMR is the most widely copied pattern in the full-size world — many other manufacturers build "RMR-footprint" optics specifically so they drop onto the enormous existing ecosystem of RMR-cut slides and mounts. Docter/Noblex (also called the Vortex Venom / Burris FastFire pattern, since those share it) is the other big full-size family, distinguished by recoil lugs at the front and rear rather than RMR's crossbolt arrangement. Shield RMSc dominates the micro-compact world — it's the small pattern you'll find on slim carry pistols where an RMR simply won't fit. How to buy without guessing
Work in this order. First, determine what your host actually has — a pistol slide is cut for a specific footprint (or ships with plates), and a rifle mount states its pattern. Second, pick optics that match that footprint natively. Third, only then consider adapter plates. Every plate adds stack height, another set of screws to loosen, and another tolerance in the chain; a native fit is always the better engineering outcome. Torque and thread specs matter more here than anywhere
Red dot mounting screws are small, and pistol slides reciprocate violently. Follow the manufacturer's torque value with an actual inch-pound driver rather than feel, use the screws supplied with the optic or plate (length matters — too long bottoms out, too short strips), and use blue thread-locker where the maker specifies it. A witness mark across each screw head turns "did that back out?" from a worry into a glance. Most "my dot broke" stories are really mounting stories.
Enclosed vs. open emitter — while you're deciding
Open-emitter dots (the classic exposed-lens designs) are lighter, cheaper, and dominate the market; their weakness is that rain, snow, lint, or holster debris can land on the emitter and block or smear the dot. Enclosed-emitter designs seal the light path entirely, which is why duty and carry users increasingly pay the size and price penalty for them. Neither is wrong — but the choice interacts with footprint availability, so decide this before you shop rather than after.
